The Main Chaga Tea Benefits

By Kathy Kaufman

Chaga tea is made from ground wild mushrooms belonging to the species Inonotus obliquus. It grows naturally as a parasite on birch trees as well as other tree types. Its physical appearance closely resembles burnt charcoal. The most favourable climatic conditions for the growth of the mushroom are found in Russia, Northern Europe, Korea and North America among others. There are many chaga tea benefits that have been identified to date.

One of the most important components in the mushroom is the enzyme known as superoxide dismutase or SOD. This is an enzyme that is very critical in cell repair after these cells have been destroyed by the superoxide anion. There are particularly high levels in the dermal and epidermal layers in the skin. Here they help stimulate maturation of important cells known as fibroblasts.

Betulinic acid, which one of the constituents of the tea is said to have anticancer properties. It is a cytotoxic agent whose main mechanism of action involves stimulation of programmed cell death (apoptosis). The other constituents that appear to help in cancer prevention are known as beta glycans. Beta glycans modulate the immune system so that it can recognize cancerous cells as being foreign and thus sets in place processes aimed at destroying them.

The mushroom has very high levels of vitamin B1 (thiamine). Thiamine is important in the synthesis of carbohydrates to produce energy. The vitamin is important in the treatment of conditions such reduced appetite, diarrhoea and ulcerative colitis. It is recommended for patients that have a compromised immune system such as those with HIV/AIDS. Other indications include diabetic pain, glaucoma, alcoholism, cataracts and motion sickness.

Other important vitamins include vitamin B2 (Riboflavin), niacin and D2. Riboflavin helps the body to make use of oxygen and to metabolize amino acids, carbohydrates and lipids. It is used medically to treat glaucoma, cataracts and eye fatigue. Vitamin B3 or niacin is required for synthesis of gonadal hormones, treatment of schizophrenia and in memory stimulation. Vitamin D2 is important in bone formation and may be used to treat some protozoa diseases.

One of the most important properties of the tea is that it is antimicrobial. It is highly effective against viruses, protozoa and bacteria. Flavonoids, melanin, magnesium, pantothenic acid, copper, selenium, saponins and zinc have the ability to inhibit the growth and replication of bacterial organisms. Betulinic acid and saponins are very effective in treatment of malaria and other protozoa infections.

The mushroom has been found to have very high levels of iron. This element is a vital component of haemoglobin, the main component of red blood cells. Deficiency of iron results in decreased oxygen carrying capacity of the blood. This is characterised by symptoms such as easy fatigability, breathlessness, dizziness, general body weakness and susceptibility to infections. Vegetarians and athletes are at the highest risk of suffering from anaemia.

While there are numerous chaga tea benefits that have been identified, a few side effects exist and you need to look out for them. Increased tendency to bleed is perhaps the most serious of them. This side effect is most serious when blood thinners such as aspirin and warfarin are taken. The other side effect is the fact that sugar levels are often deranged and one may suffer from the effects of hypoglycaemia. Caution should therefore be exercised at all times.
