What Is Hypothyroidism And What Causes The Disease?

By James Kupe

While it might be cold comfort to be told you are suffering with Hypothyroidism, it has become a very common problem and you are certainly not alone. In fact, millions of people around the world suffer with the disease every day. That means there are likely new treatments being developed to help you life with the condition. Hypothyroidism happens when your thyroid gland stops making the hormones you need to regulate and stimulate your body's metabolism. If your metabolism is all out of whack, it's very hard for your body to stay strong and healthy.

There's been a lot of research done on Hypothyroidism over the years, and experts have discovered that people over 50 tend to be more likely to suffer from this condition. That's not to say that people under 50 can't have the disease, it's just that it's not as likely to happen at a younger age. Probably one of the biggest problems caused by Hypothyroidism is the way it can increase your body's cholesterol level, which as you know, can lead to diabetes and heart disease.

Many people suffering from Hypothyroidism find the first symptoms tend to be a feeling of general weakness in your body and a sense of mental fatigue. Unexplained feelings of depression or deep sadness, or unexplained weight gain can also be two of the first signs you are suffering from the disease.

One of the first things you need to know if you've been diagnosed with Hypothyroidism is that it's very common, and there are lots of different causes in our modern society. While this doesn't apply to everyone, having unhealthy or unhygienic eating habits can be an obvious but often misunderstood cause of thyroid problems.

Eating too many sugary or starchy foods can also lead to trouble with your thyroid gland. If you tend to live with severe or chronic stress, this can lead to thyroid problems as well. Autoimmune Diseases with horrible names like Atrophic Thyroiditis and Hashimoto's Thyroiditis can appear suddenly for a range of reasons. And if you have had any kind of radiation treatment (which can damage your thyroid gland), it can be another cause of Hypothyroidism.

There are also a number of medications such as Lithium and Interferon Alpha which have been known to cause side-effects which can lead to Hypothyroidism. Other causes can include low or no iodine intake, and your thyroid gland being attacked by bacteria in some way. Viral or Autoimmune Thyroiditis can also lead to Hypothyroidism, as can many diseases of the Pituitary gland.

Hypothyroidism can be treated in quite a few different ways. Many people are turning to natural remedies due to the potential side effects of some drugs. While natural treatments for Hypothyroidism don't work for everyone, they can be a good complement to the treatments recommended by your doctor or health professional.
